Dishwasher Detergent

If you are like us, you wash more dishes than you care to think about. Even with the help of the dishwasher it can still be a monstrous task. And with it comes the cost of buying all that detergent - it can really add up! So we were inspired to find a recipe for our own, homemade dishwasher detergent that would cut the cost to a minimum while still getting the job done. There were quite a few recipes that we found, but this one (from www.stretcher.com) seems to work great - at a fraction of the cost of commercial brands!

Mix together equal parts Borax and Baking Soda in an empty canister. Pour vinegar into the rinse agent dispenser in your dishwasher. This is important because the Borax definitely needs some extra help getting rinsed off, and vinegar is a super-cheap and effective way to do it! Scoop 1 Tbsp. into each side of your dishwasher's soap dispenser. Run your machine as you normally would!

You'll be surprised at how great this works and how cheap it is!

  3. Very excited to try this. I've been using homemade laundry detergent for a couple of months very happily. Does it matter what kind of vinegar? White vinegar? Apple vinegar?

  5. i'm so glad i came across this post via Today's Creative Blog. i've been making my own laundry detergent for quite some time now, but i've needed a dishwasher detergent for so long now. this one seems very easy and cheap. can't wait to try it. a couple of questions though...i put the vinegar in where the jet dry would go? and, my dishwasher just has a single soap dispenser...can i mix the borax and baking soda together in there? thanks!

  6. Yep! Just pour it in the jet dry dispenser! We mix up a big batch of detergent and store it in a canister. Then we scoop out the proper amount and put it in the dishwasher's soap dispenser.

    Hope this answers your questions!

  7. I featured this on my blog today: www.SnugasaBugBaby.com. I would love to try it, but can you tell me were to find Borax...with dish soap, laundry soap, other cleaners? Does it come in a box, bag, or some other container? I don't know what to look for.

    Thanks for the great idea!

  11. This stuff works great on my dishes, but the silverware is coming out with a white film on it and we usually have to rinse or even rewash it again. Any suggestions?
