Like most moms we want our families to look their best. We feel a sense of pride when our boys leave the house each morning freshly scrubbed, neat and tidy. By the time they come home after school they are usually sloppy, dirty and stained. The worst offenders are their white socks, or should we say their once white socks. Horrifying! No matter what we did they never seemed to come clean again. We set out on a mission to find out what other parents do to keep their kid's socks white.
Here is what we found:
Wash the really dirty whites, like socks, separately from your other whites to keep them from graying the cleaner whites.
Soak the socks in dishwasher detergent for at least 2 hours before washing and bleaching socks. We found this also really helped our husbands white undershirts as well. It helped remove those stubborn deodorant stains. We used a 1/2 cup in our washing machine and hot water.
Wash the socks and then re wash and bleach them. This helps the dirt from redepositing on your clean socks.
We were so pleased with how good the boys socks looked! Even if it only last a few fleeting moments.
But, the best and easiest new trick we learned...
...just buy black socks!
I love this! My mother-in-law bought me white socks for Christmas this year and always buys hubby white socks. GRR! LOL. Definitely gonna be trying this!

LOL I have socks bleaching right now actually! BUT my recipe is

1 cap of laundry detergent
1 cup powdered dish washer detergent
1 cup bleach
1/2 cup borax
Tell you what, you have to rewash it once to put softener in but it's the whitest you'll ever see your whites. If you omit the bleach it works great to get stains out of colors too (baby spit up is no longer a stain on OLD clothes)
How much hot water?

DeleteIt looks like this is a bleaching recipe, not a washing recipe, so 1 cap of laundry detergent seems right to me!
DeleteIf you have a teenage boy, especially one in sports, buying black socks might not be the best option...they sure do manage to stink their socks up and you can't use bleach on them to kill the bacteria. (Just a new situation for me, as my oldest boy is growing up)

DeletePut 1 cup of white vinegar in the wash water. Also have the boys soak their feet once or twice a week in, a vessel their feet will fit in, with half a gallon of water with 1 cup of white vinegar. This is the only treatment, that actually works for the STINKY feet of my boys.

ReplyDeleteBear in mind though that black socks cause your feet to sweat more, which in turn can cause your feet and shoes to smell to high heaven. Can also be a breading ground for fungus like athletes foot because the foot stays more moist. Though harder to keep clean, white socks are better for your feet.

I normally wash it with other black shirts (older ones) but accidentally got a recently re-dyed shirt in the load. Now the X is grey and dingy. How do I get the X white again?
ReplyDeleteMy son has two pairs of 100% polyester "white" Nike basketball shorts (one with red stripes that aren't polyester and one with green). The white is now a light gray. I have tried many different ways to whiten them again. Any suggestions?

ReplyDeleteI came across this awesome product to get your dingy whites bright again. I bought it at Walmart and it's called White Bright. I haven't used this on my socks but I have in my whites load and it worked great.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't believe my mother when she said she washed my dad's lab coat in the family washing machine back in the 60's when he first opened his medical office practice. That was back in the days before AIDS, but other people's blood...GROSS. I then thought about my grandma complaining about the farmers and their dirty boots tracking though her living room when my grandpa had his office at home in the first year after returning from being a a naval doctor in Guam (1943-1946). Then the PBS shows on the Dust Bowl era make me just crave a glass of water. Love both my dishwasher and washing machine, but now I can hybridize with your tip.
